On the eve of Memorial Day, 904 Happy Hour went down to St. Augustine and got to see Old Crow Medicine perform at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. Many people waited outside to get in the amphitheater, and they were excited to see this band. The opening act for the band was Dale Watson. I thought he was good for an opening act. His style is like old school country, with his band having just a thump bass, pedal steel, a small drum kit, and Dale playing guitar. Dale Watson was fine for an opening act, but the crowd was waiting for Old Crow Medicine show.

Once Old Crow Medicine came on stage and I heard them, I thought they were really impressive. This band used all acoustic instruments and nothing else. When I heard their music,  I thought I was at a Lumineers show or a Mumford and Sons show. This kind of country music was more bluegrass and folk. This band has also earned a high honor as they were recently inducted into the Grand Ole Opry this year.  Old Crow Medicine Show had some amazing songs such as “Carry Me Back to Virginia”, “CC Rider”, “Tell It to Me”, and their mega hit “Wagon Wheel”. This band created the song “Wagon Wheel”, with a little help from legendary Bob Dylan, who sketched the idea first.  It was then covered by Darius Rucker. It was just awesome to see the creators of the song sing the mega hit. Since it was Memorial Day weekend ,  OCMS did an American Pride tribute including playing a new song “Dearly Departed Friend” in honor of the holiday.  OCMS has a new album “Remedy” coming out in July, and played another new song “Sweet Amarillo”. 

Old Crow Medicine Show was fun and exciting. The crowd had a blast and their music got the people dancing. Country music has lots of styles:  classic, bluegrass, modern, rock, or pop; performers have a certain style of country music but it’s just great to see and hear old fashioned country every now and then. Since they just became new members of the Grand Ole Opry, we will be seeing and hearing them again soon.
