The (5-0) Jacksonville Sharks are now the only National Arena League team in the league to not lose a game following their 60-21 win Monday night game against the Monterrey Steel in Mexico. Prior to kickoff the Steel and Sharks were both at the top of the NAL standings as two unbeaten power houses faced each other in Monterrey for a cross border matchup. The Steel found great success in their first year in the NAL and the only international team in the league and the unbeaten Sharks arriving in Mexico drew a lot of attention for a great matchup.
On Monday night, Jacksonville struck first with a pass from Tommy Grady to Thyron Lewis and soon followed up with another bomb to Marquel Wade to give the Sharks an early two-touchdown lead. The quarter ended 17-0 and could not have ended better for the Sharks as Nick Belcher kicked a deuce through the uprights and defensive lineman Jermiah Price sacked Steel quarterback Kasey Peters in the endzone, earning a safety.
Marquel Wade caught his second touchdown pass of the night in the second quarter, and Nick Belcher scored an extra two points as he made another deuce on the kickoff. The Sharks defense proved to be the best in the league yet again as they shutout the Steel from scoring a single point in the first two quarters, the score 27-0 going into the second half.
During the second half, Tommy Grady suffered an ankle injury early in the third quarter and was replaced by backup QB Damien Flemming, who led the team the rest of the way to victory with an additional 33 points. Nick Belcher scored his third deuce of the game, his best all season.
The Sharks are now the only undefeated team in the National Arena League and look to face off against the Columbus Lions next on April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shark Tank.
