The Chassahowitzka River is a five mile long spring-fed river. It’s located about 3 hours away from Jacksonville and makes for a great day trip. The rivers name “Chassahowitzka” comes from the Seminole Indians that inhabited the area- meaning "hanging pumpkins place". Many locals call the river the “Chaz” and it’s located about a half-hour south of the better known Crystal River.  

The Chaz is designated as an Outstanding Florida Water by the state of Florida. You can spot otters, manatees, bald eagles, and tons of other wildlife. While at the river and springs you can bike, swim, fish, bird watch, hike, camp and paddle.

A grouping of springs is located off of the river just northeast of the boat ramp, the largest being the Main Spring. Feel free to hop in the water to cool off- the water is 72 degrees year-round.

There are 2 miles of multi-use trails to either bike or hike. Saltwater fishing is great near the gulf, and fresh water fish can be caught in the springs. Crabbing is extremely popular. If you decide to hop in the water, you can paddle the river to the Gulf of Mexico, or just springs-hop the day away. Along your journey You will come across a rope swing and a few other cool spots.

Kayak, paddleboard, and canoe rentals are available from Nature Coast Outpost, which is located right at the boat ramp. Parking is $5.
