Matanzas Inlet was a big part of Spanish colonial history. The massacre of French soldiers in 1565 was Spain’s opening move of establishing in Florida. The construction in 1740-42 was Spain’s last effort to ward off the British invasion on St. Augustine. Fort Matanzas served as extra defense for St. Augustine since it is further south. This park does reenactments with various tools and tricks of colonial life. This will make you feel like you are in the 18th century.

Unfortunately, the park is closed due to COVID-19. The National Park Service website does a great job with their app and virtual tour. Although you can’t visit at the moment you can learn online. Once the park opens you can visit and be familiar. Do you plan on visiting  Matanzas National Monument in the future? Check the website for updates on park openings.
