The 904 is getting a new area code, the 324! The population in Northeast Florida has grown so much that phone numbers starting in 904 are expected to run out by 2024. The new 324 area code was approved in May by the Florida Public Service Commission to expand the area's supply of telephone numbers in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Fernandina Beach, and Orange Park.

Existing numbers will keep the 904 area code but new customers or requests for additional lines may start with 324. No date was set yet for when the overlap will happen.

10-digit dialing will be required to make local calls once the new numbers are in place.

Florida will have 23 area codes with the latest addition. The commission also recently approved new area codes for Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
