It’s not to say the Jaguars aren’t doing any good things on the football field. They’re just not doing enough of them.
Sunday’s game was a tale of two halves. Jacksonville was actually in control for much of the first half. A late touchdown before time expired gave the Broncos a 10-7 lead at the break, but momentum could have been very different if not for two missed Jacksonville field goals and a few more first downs. It’s hard to take a losing team seriously that is continually saying “we’re close,” but after reviewing the film again from yesterday, there were some signs of life.
The Jags had no issue getting off to a hot start, driving 83 yards on their first series to post an early 7-0 lead. Lawrence’s 25 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones was arguably his best throw of the season and the Duval faithful were loving it. Unfortunately, that was the best the offense looked all afternoon, as they wound up with 189 yards of total offense. You can point to a lot of different reasons as to why things went south, but less than 200 yards of offense is rarely ever going to win a football game.
The first year quarterback’s decision making was better this week, although you wouldn’t know it by his statline. Lawrence threw for over 300 yards last week, but had three poor interceptions. He only passed for 118 yards this week, but seemed in better command of the offense. He threw two interceptions this week; the first was late in the third quarter, the second early in the fourth. Both came in a situation where the Jags were trying to keep pace and push the ball downfield, and both were very good defensive plays by the Broncos. It’s not exactly ideal to have to focus on throwing “better” interceptions, but these are the kinds of small victories a young team should be focusing on. The offensive line also looked notably better, only allowing one sack on the day.
The defense held up a little better this week as well, but still had some issues in the secondary. Shaquill Griffin made a nice play on a deep ball and saw the interception bounce off his hands multiple times before it finally fell to the ground. This was another play that could have turned the tide of the game had it fallen in Jacksonville’s favor. Jamal Agnew returned a kickoff for a touchdown which was a good sign, as special teams plays are big for a team to find a spark when they’re struggling on both sides of the ball.
This week was better than last week, and it’s important that Jacksonville continues to say that on Mondays. The Jags will play at TIAA Bank Field again next week against the Arizona Cardinals at 1:00 PM.
