Coming up on October 22 on the taxiways and runways of the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport is a unique 5k race called the Ben Byrns 5K Runway Rally. The special event and fundraiser was organized to honor the memory of Ben Byrns, a college student who loved the outdoors, surfing, running, sports, and who was studying to become a pilot like his father. Ben Byrns passed away in 2012 from an accidental overdose of prescription pain medication at the age of 20. His parents and friends organized this race held in his memory with the express desire to raise funds for local charitable organizations that work to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among Fernandina's youth,  including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Nassau County because of the work they do with children and young adults, and to the Nassau Humane Society where Ben volunteered.

The race, which attracts hundreds of participants and spectators will start 9 am, but racers are encouraged to arrive early to check in. Festivities will include a 5K Runway Rally, Kids 1 Mile Fun Run, Nassau County School Challenge, Silent Auction and much more.

Those interested in signing up for the race can do so online until 10/18, or day of at the starting line! For more info, click here
