Finding something fun to do in Jacksonville isn’t a very hard task, and finding somewhere to have a good drink is an even easier one. After some exploring the area, I stumbled upon Painting with a Twist in San Marco, an eclectic little painting studio that offers painting lessons with the perks of enjoying an adult beverage at the same time. The studio has a welcoming family feel as it is owned and operated by brother-sister duo and Jacksonville natives, Geri and Josh Bernard. From birthday parties, Bachelorette celebrations, or simply because you have a night off they provide the paint and you have all the fun!
Classes for every skill level are offered every week, and also open for private party bookings if you are looking to have a special gathering. Sizes of classes vary from a ten person private party to going on forty to make for a packed house. The best part about Painting with a Twist is that no experience is necessary, every painting is taught step-by-step by an instructor on stage going at your pace. The team motto is even “Fun art, not fine art” as they want you and your crew to have fun while creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art to take home at the end of the night.
In my class, we were painting a Florida light house, one of 486 and counting paintings available at Painting with a Twist. I was sitting between a couple celebrating their anniversary and a family celebrating a birthday. Also in the room was a group of teachers from a local school sipping to summer vacation. The class begins with the instructor going over the rules, such as “Remember to have fun!” and “Don’t put your brushes in your drink and don’t drink your brush water!” Throughout the class you are encouraged to take breaks, have a snack, fill your glass, and let your painting take care of itself. The instructor walks around frequently to answer any questions and to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves, sometimes they even turn off the lights for a little dance break under the disco ball.
To sign up for classes, you can contact one their two locations, San Marco and Fleming Island. The main studio is where most classes take place, but a more intimate Bungalow studio is also available for special events and bookings. Class prices range from kids classes at $25 that last an hour and a half to three hour long more detailed classes for $45. Included in your class is all of your painting supplies and instruction, you are encouraged to bring your beverage of choice and whatever you may want to munch on. The studio has ice buckets to keep your drink cool while you paint. The paintings vary from flowers to Jacksonville scenery and even an option to paint your own pet, one of the specialty classes offered.
