A Dead 30-Foot-Long Humpback Whale Washes Up On Fernandina Beach

A dead 30 foot long humpback whale that washed onto Fernandina Beach early Sunday is the latest in an alarming increase in fatalities for the federally endangered mammal. The whale showed signs of scavenging by sharks, FWC officials said, which are natural predators to humpback whales.

Marine and wildlife crews are trying determine why the humpback whale died. Before the whale was buried under the sand on Monday, samples were collected so that a necropsy, which is similar to an autopsy, can be performed to determine the cause of death.

It could take months or even years, for the whale's body to completely decompose under the sand, but Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said there are no health or safety risks for people who want to come out to the beach.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that anyone who sees a beached whale or dolphin is asked to immediately call FWC or 1-877-WHALE-HELP. People may do more harm than good if they try to push it back into the water on their own.

The AFC Overcomes A 17-point Deficit To Stun The NFC In The Pro Bowl 24-23

The steady rain was a factor in the first of four AFC turnovers in the 2018 Pro Bowl, but the AFC rallied for a 24-23 victory over the NFC at Camping World Stadium.

The NFC built a 20-3 lead by halftime, but the AFC made a game out of it by cutting the deficit to three points in the third quarter. With three minutes left in the game, the Derek Carr-quarterback AFC squad trailed by six points and faced a fourth-and-7. Carr hit Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry for a first down. A slant to Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton on the other side of the two-minute warning got the AFC inside the red zone. A dart from Carr to Titans tight end Delanie Walker gave the AFC their first lead of the game with 91 seconds remaining.

The Titans' tight end  Delanie Walker took home offensive MVP honors while the Broncos' pass rusher Von Miller won defensive MVP. Walker caught four passes for 29 yards and two scores. Broncos linebacker Von Miller hadthree tackles and a game-sealing strip sack with 36 seconds remaining.

The rain returned in the fourth quarter and Peterson's second interception initially appeared to seal the NFC win. But Carr led a seven-play, 47-yard scoring drive as Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who went 10 of 18 for 86 ...   [Read More]

    Jaguars Vs Broncos Pre Game

Blaine Gabbert is officially done as a quarterback in Jacksonville, in my eyes at least. His play during the Rams game was atrocious and I’ve finally hit that point where I don’t think he’s going to get any better here. We’ve all got that breaking point, and I’ve finally reached mine. But you guys don’t want to hear me rant about the QB situation in  Jacksonville. You want to know if the Jaguars have a chance at winning this next game. So let’s dive in.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5) face off in Denver against the Broncos (5-0) tomorrow afternoon. This game’s importance is only relevant to the national media who want to see the most lopsided victory in NFL history and those who want to try and make some money in Vegas. The Broncos are a Super Bowl caliber team; the Jaguars aren’t. But even though these two teams are on opposite directions and statistics tell you that this shouldn’t be a competitive game, remember what happened on that day in January in 1997 (if you aren’t aware of the story, please catch yourself up on Jaguars history)

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has 20 TD passes to 1 interception and is on pace to break many NFL passing records. His weapons in Julius T...   [Read More]

Jaguars Predictions - Will We Win

Jacksonville FL - Another week, another embarrassing loss for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although the outcome against the Seattle Seahawks was expected, there were a few positive spots in the game. Rookie safety Jonathan Cyprien had a sack and forced fumble that was recovered and turned into points. The Jaguars managed to score two touchdowns this week doubling their total from the first two weeks. So the team is making progress, right? Right?

The Jaguars (0-3) host the Indianapolis Colts (2-1) at Everbank Field Sunday afternoon. This is the first home game after the long two-week West Coast road trip and this game also signifies the return of quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who missed the previous two games due to a hand injury. Also returning to the field is tight end Marcedes Lewis, who's presence will be felt on both the offensive line and in the passing game as another potential weapon for the offense.  Colts QB Andrew Luck comes into the game after a decent performance against the San Francisco 49'ers (17-26, 159 yards, 1 rushing TD) looking to improve on a 1-1 record against the Jaguars.

Colts newly acquired RB Trent Richardson has been getting more accustomed to the play book and should see an expanded role in their of...   [Read More]

    Jaguars Pre Game Weigh In

Once again, the lackluster play of the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks leaves fans with a gritty and disgusted taste in their mouth. Some feel the team would be better with a certain hometown hero who would love to see him don the black and teal. I disagree. Rusty Smith would probably not make this squad better at the moment. But I digress...

The Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) face off against the Seattle Seahawks (2-0) on the second West Coast game of the season. Jacksonville stayed out in California during the week to avoid making an extra trip and practiced at a local college. The offense as a whole struggled again last week, losing against the Oakland Raiders 19-9, but showed signs of life late in the game when quarterback Chad Henne threw a late touchdown to tight end Allen Reisner in the 4th quarter.  Defensively, the Jaguars made enough plays to keep the team in the game, holding the Raiders to 4 field goals and rookie safety Jonathan Cyprien started to look a little more comfortable as he had 3 hard-hitting tackles and forced a 4th quarter fumble, which the Jaguars recovered and turned into points.  Looking forward to Seattle, what can we expect from this game? Well, one can only hope that the Jaguars can find a way to play smart football...   [Read More]

Goin’ Coastal Music Series is proud to announce the return of the Slide into Spring Music and Craft Beer presented by Sweetwater Brewing Company. Its coming back to Main Beach in Fernandina on March 28th and 29th of 2015 with headliner Matisyahu! After a successful inaugural event, one that featured folk legend Keller Williams and a handful of other national acts, over a dozen craft breweries and countless entertainment opportunities, Slide into Spring returns to help raise money for 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc. and the Nassau Humane Society. Last year the event raised over $15,000 for the 8 Flags Playscapes project, Pirate Playground. This year we hope to help both groups move closer to some other big projects they have on their plate.

This year we have taken the event to a whole other level. The event has been pushed to a 2-day event, has an over-the-top music lineup, increased entertainment zone, early morning yoga seminars, a beach clean-up, off-site primitive camping and much, much more.

Saturday, we stick to the roots of the first year with a funky music line-up, craft beer tasting in the early part of the day, interactive kids zone and area food trucks. Pensacola up and comers Post Pluto will kick things off. After that, Jackso...   [Read More]

Gator Country Fall Concert Series Recap

Jacksonville, FL (November 19) From November 5 to November 16, the Jacksonville Fair arrived and provided fair-goers many shows during the two weeks. The Gator Country Concert Series also came onto the scene. It all started on Thursday November 6 with Thompson Square to kick off the concert. They opened their show with their hit song “I Got You” and performed with excellence and energy. They played their best songs such as “Let’s Fight”, ”I Can’t Outrun You”, “Glass”, “If I Didn’t Have You”, and “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not”. I found their show great and a great start to the concert series.

The next day was not what was expected. With a cold front coming in, many people didn’t show up to see Lindsay Ell. She is a new upcoming country artist from Canada, and was an awesome guitar player. I do wish for more female guitar pickers, and this was something new for Jacksonville. Her performance was great, and she can rock out on a guitar. Her songs that got her on country radio are “Shut Me Up”, and “Trippin on Us”. I hope she comes back when the weather is better so everybody can see how awesome she is.

Explore The Cummer Museum in Jacksonville

From One Woman’s Vision, A Cultural Gift

The Cummer was established in 1958, when art collector, garden enthusiast and civic leader Ninah Cummer bequeathed the art collection and riverfront home, which she owned with her husband Arthur, to create an art museum.  Mrs. Cummer made an official announcement of the gift a year before her death, imploring community leaders to help support the museum she intended to found: “Naturally no civic undertaking can function adequately without the interest and support of the community in which it is located. Therefore it is hoped that there may be additions to the Foundation from time to time so that this Museum may rank favorably with those established in other cities in the United States during the last few decades."On the evening of November 10, 1961, the city of Jacksonville received what would become one of its greatest gifts. That night, more than 1,000 residents and dignitaries welcomed the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens to Jacksonville’s cultural landscape.

Immediately following Mrs. Cummer’s death, the Board of Trustees set forth to build the Museum on the grounds of the Cummer home.  In less than 10 years, the Trustees would dedicate the Museum, and grow the colle...   [Read More]

    Major Ft Caroline Discovery

For years the exact location of Ft. Caroline, the first French colony has been a mystery. Historians believe the fort was located here in Jacksonville along the St. Johns but to this day until July 29th 2014, there were no positive identifications of the exact location. Earlier this year, researchers asserted the colony was located, not on the St. Johns River, but on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia.

State Rep. Lake Ray believes he and his son Lake Ray IV and  Mark Lloyd may have made the discovery of a lifetime. Lake Ray announced his findings Tuesday morning at a news conference. He believes their findings confirm the landmark’s Northeast Florida location along the St. Johns River.

Ray, along with his son, Lake Ray IV and Mark Lloyd have been looking into this specific location now for a couple weeks. Using historical books and Google Maps, they believe they might have found a location that matched the dimensions and geographic area. Ray has asked the the area to not be reveled to prevent tampering and looting of the site. The site is being protected by the Coast Guard and National Park Service, and tampering with the site is a felony.
