Barrique: The New Resturaunt in Avondale

Jacksonville has seen a rise in new restaurants this year. The newest restaurant in Avondale is Barrique.  Barrique is all about enjoying life with good friends, good food, & good wine. The name is derived from the old world dialects of France, Italy and Spain, literally meaning a small oak cask barrel used for making fine wines.

The three partners of Barrique, Greg Bartolotta, Rich Rapp, and Joseph Murphy, are long time friends from Long Island, NY. Both Rich and Joseph relocated to the Jacksonville area over the past 10 years to bring the idea of a conceptual restaurant here. Greg has built and operated as many as 7 successful restaurants in the NYC area. They chose to open their restaurant in Avondale due to its energy and the contributions of the surrounding community members along with its rustic look.

    Oven Roasted Oysters, Octopus, Burrata

    Seared Tuna

Barrique offers fabulous rustic food, artisanal cheeses, cured meats, thin crust pizza, pan pressed sandwiches, mini desserts & much more, all centered around a social sharing experience, with attentive personal service, while letting you, the guest, set the pace. The popular dishes that guests love are the Oven Roasted Oysters...   [Read More]

Catty Shack Wildlife Sanctuary Welcomes Four Tigers And One Grey Fox

Four tigers and one grey fox now call Catty Shack Ranch their “fur-ever” home. Their new residents came from a private facility in South Florida which had sustained damage during Hurricane Irma.  Combined, the new tigers can eat over 100 pounds in a single day.

The first tiger is Dozer, and he was named appropriately. At just 4 years old, he weighs an estimated 550 pounds. Dozer was born on September 11, 2013. He is still adjusting to his new home and settles in a bit more every day. He is enjoying meeting all of his new caregivers and greets them with warm chuffs. The second tiger, Haley, is 15 months old and all spunk. She is the most talkative of all and loves to egg on her habitat mates! Haley was born on September 13, 2016. The last two tigers are a brother/sister pair, Rocky and Adrian. Although they are not related to Haley, they do share the same habitat and love each other dearly. Rocky and Adrian are 20 months old, born on April 28, 2016. Rocky, Adrian, and Haley have already been dubbed “The Three Amigos” by several of the volunteers.

Piper, the new grey fox, is 2 years old and was originally born in a wildlife rehab center where her mom was being treated. Piper was born ...   [Read More]

THE PLAYERS Giving Back Month concludes with Red Coat Ride Out

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. - THE PLAYERS volunteer leadership – the Red Coats –once again hit the road for what has become a Giving Back Month tradition: the Red Coat Ride Out.  This year, the Red Coats took a tour of the Operation New Hope facility before joining the UNF First Generation Scholars Luncheon; both organizations are recipients of Red Coat grants. The Red Coat Ride Out concluded a month of events that celebrated THE PLAYERS charitable outreach and total charitable donations as a result of the 2013 tournament.

Operation New Hope received a $10,000 grant from the Red Coats this year, and a surprise $10,000 donation from THE PLAYERS was revealed during the Red Coats visit. Operation New Hope, founded in 1999, is a faith-based, nonprofit community development corporation. Operation New Hope has maintained a two-pronged business model vital to sustaining broken urban communities: affordable housing; and successful workforce reintegration of ex-offenders. The $20,000 donation will support Operation New Hope’s Ready 4 Work program, designed to assist in curtailing prison recidivism and since its inception has assisted more than 2,500 participants.

MC Wale Previews Florida - Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, FL - It is that time of the year again: the RV's are pulling into Jacksonville, the trash talk over the airwaves and social media has started, and the invitations to tailgate parties are being shared as the entire city preps itself for one of the most exciting weekends in Jacksonville. The Florida-Georgia game, also known as the World's Largest Cocktail Party, is always a good time, although there seems to be a little less luster on this year's matchup due to the status of the two teams at this point of the season.

The Florida Gators (4-3) and the Georgia Bulldogs (4-3) both entered this season with their eyes focused on Atlanta and the SEC championship. Both teams have very slim chances of making that goal a reality with both teams having two losses in the conference. Georgia specifically has been dealing with a ton of injuries on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Georgia is expected to have running back Todd Gurley, which should help quarterback Aaron Murray and their 25th ranked passing attack balance out the rest of their offense.

Indie Country Rock Artist Jenny Lewis To Perform at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Saturday, May 9, 2015

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (January 20, 2015) — The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall proudly announces that indie country rock singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis will perform on Saturday, May 9, 2015. Tickets for Jenny Lewis will go on sale to the public this Friday, January 23 at 10 a.m.

In July of 2014, Jenny Lewis returned with her new album, The Voyager. The Los Angeles artist’s first solo LP since 2008’s Acid Tongue, The Voyager is Lewis’s most deeply personal, and her most musically robust. Featuring production work from Ryan Adams, Beck, as well as Lewis and her longtime collaborator Johnathan Rice, The Voyager finds Lewis at her sharp-witted best, singing about her recent life with honesty and incisiveness. And then there’s her voice, which was already a force to be reckoned with, but sounds even richer, more nuanced, more powerful. Lewis says The Voyager was the hardest album she has ever made, documenting her struggle to cope following the death of her estranged father in 2010 and the subsequent break-up of her band, Rilo Kiley. In the three years she worked on it, there were moments she thought she’d never finish. But, more than ever before, she knew she had to. The story is best told in Lewis’s own words:

Meet the Boatanista - Lisa Almeida

How many people have you heard say they were involved in a particular activity “before they could walk”? In most cases, it is a figure of speech used to emphasize a point. In my case it is the literal truth.

I was a boater long before I could walk. And it is not just a figure of speech for me to claim that boating is etched into my DNA. I have visible proof.

My favorite photo hangs on the wall over my breakfast table. It is a vintage, 1950s-era image of two water skiers waving to the camera as they are pulled behind a boat. The man and woman in the photo are competitive water skiers at world-famous Cypress Gardens. They are young, and fit, and smiling. What the photo does not reveal is that the two are among the best at their craft, and have set various records and won numerous accolades.

It is a photo of my parents. To say I grew up boating is no exaggeration. In fact, before I could crawl, my parents would secure my baby carrier firmly near the helm of the boat as they practiced their routines. I took to boating from the start. My parents told me that the movement of the water would most often lull me to sleep.

When other kids were riding tricycles I was learning to ski. When other kids were pl...   [Read More]
