City Hall Annex Implosion Set To Begin Next Year
Downtown Jacksonville will start off with a bang next year as the city intends to implode the old City Hall Annex at 220 E. Bay St on the second weekend of January.
Sam Mousa, chief administrative officer for Mayor Lenny Curry, stated that the date is subject to change. Mouse said the seven story courthouse building will undergo “conventional demolition” that doesn't require an implosion.
Environmental Holdings Group LLC of North Carolina submitted the lowest bid of $7.98 million in June to demolish the 16-story annex and the old Duval County Courthouse.
Built in 1956, the courthouse comprises almost 360,000 square feet of space, much more than the annex according to property records.
The annex, built in 1960, contains 200,000 square feet of space but is much taller than the courthouse. Environmental Holdings Group obtained permitting and began work in early August on both buildings after the city issued notice to proceed on July 26.
Contractors are performing interior demolition starting from the top floors down in both buildings. The Interior demolition on the annex building is expected to run through December and the work inside the courthouse could finish in late October or November.... [Read More]

Councilman Reggie Brown Is Trying To Get Rid Of Food Trucks Forever!
Jacksonville Fl - Food trucks have become one of the most popular types of restaurants to hit the streets of Jacksonville over the past few years. Despite the views of the citizens and tax payers, City Councilman Reggie Brown is moving forward on an attempt to legislate food trucks out of existence in Jacksonville.
This Wednesday at 3pm, Councilman Reggie Brown will hold a public meeting regarding a draft ordinance that will severely limit the ability of food truck operators to conduct business in Jacksonville.
Beside food trucks being a huge economic driver for the downtown district, they have helped bring more foot traffic to places that don't even offer food or drinks. We were under the understanding that the city was trying to get more people to visit downtown Jacksonville... It doesn't sound like it by these actions.
Sign the petition below to prevent this new ordinance from going in to order below:... [Read More]

Healthy Soup Options During the Cold and Flu Season
The variations of soups are endless given the number of different proteins, grains and vegetables one could choose. Soup is oh so nourishing and it provides hydration, electrolytes, and energy for your body. A warm cup of soup is often the go-to food of choice if you unfortunately fall ill during cold and flu season. But are all soups healthy?
Though comforting, soup typically has a high sodium content. One Cup of canned soup often has anywhere from 480 to 890 milligrams of sodium; this can reach up to 38% of the recommended maximum daily allowance of 2300 milligrams.
If cream is used as the foundation for soup, such as in a bisque or chowder, the fat content may rise above 10 grams per cup; that’s 90 calories from fat! So how does one justify enjoying this simple dish while still meeting healthy standards?
One option is to cook from scratch; by doing this you can replace the salt with herbs and spices. The outcome can be successful if you are comfortable in the kitchen or following a great recipe. Unfortunately for me, I tried this myself and results were inconsistent; sometimes very flavorful and other times my soup was quite watery. Another alternative for healthy people without kidney issues is to use a potassium based salt su... [Read More]

Haunted: The Florida Theatre
There’s a building Downtown some believe is haunted. In three years’ time, three different ghost-hunting expeditions spent nights there – and one expedition detected something: An apparition of a body sitting in balcony chair.
That apparition was detected at the Florida Theatre, one of Downtown’s most beautiful historic landmarks. If the walls of the Florida Theatre could talk, there would be some amazing stories to tell. Lucky for us, though, the Florida Theatre staff offers tours to the public. We had the opportunity to do so at a recent First Wednesday Art Walk.
This tour explores the stage, backstage, the “green room,” dressing rooms, the promenade, the Barnett Room and the balcony. It’s awe-inspiring from start to finish. Here are a few fun facts about the venue that fascinate us most:Elvis Presley performed at the Florida Theatre in 1956, one of his first headline concerts appearances on an indoor stage. The performance was the subject of a LIFE Magazine feature, and a local judge sat through the concert to make sure Presley’s dancing was not too suggestive. When the Florida Theatre opened in 1927 as a movie theater, Forsyth Street was known as &... [Read More]
