Barrique: The New Resturaunt in Avondale

Jacksonville has seen a rise in new restaurants this year. The newest restaurant in Avondale is Barrique.  Barrique is all about enjoying life with good friends, good food, & good wine. The name is derived from the old world dialects of France, Italy and Spain, literally meaning a small oak cask barrel used for making fine wines.

The three partners of Barrique, Greg Bartolotta, Rich Rapp, and Joseph Murphy, are long time friends from Long Island, NY. Both Rich and Joseph relocated to the Jacksonville area over the past 10 years to bring the idea of a conceptual restaurant here. Greg has built and operated as many as 7 successful restaurants in the NYC area. They chose to open their restaurant in Avondale due to its energy and the contributions of the surrounding community members along with its rustic look.

    Oven Roasted Oysters, Octopus, Burrata

    Seared Tuna

Barrique offers fabulous rustic food, artisanal cheeses, cured meats, thin crust pizza, pan pressed sandwiches, mini desserts & much more, all centered around a social sharing experience, with attentive personal service, while letting you, the guest, set the pace. The popular dishes that guests love are the Oven Roasted Oysters...   [Read More]

Catty Shack Wildlife Sanctuary Welcomes Four Tigers And One Grey Fox

Four tigers and one grey fox now call Catty Shack Ranch their “fur-ever” home. Their new residents came from a private facility in South Florida which had sustained damage during Hurricane Irma.  Combined, the new tigers can eat over 100 pounds in a single day.

The first tiger is Dozer, and he was named appropriately. At just 4 years old, he weighs an estimated 550 pounds. Dozer was born on September 11, 2013. He is still adjusting to his new home and settles in a bit more every day. He is enjoying meeting all of his new caregivers and greets them with warm chuffs. The second tiger, Haley, is 15 months old and all spunk. She is the most talkative of all and loves to egg on her habitat mates! Haley was born on September 13, 2016. The last two tigers are a brother/sister pair, Rocky and Adrian. Although they are not related to Haley, they do share the same habitat and love each other dearly. Rocky and Adrian are 20 months old, born on April 28, 2016. Rocky, Adrian, and Haley have already been dubbed “The Three Amigos” by several of the volunteers.

Piper, the new grey fox, is 2 years old and was originally born in a wildlife rehab center where her mom was being treated. Piper was born ...   [Read More]

Visit Devils Den - Swim, Snorkle and Scuba Hot Spot.

Visit one of North America's most prehistoric places, Devil's Den -- an underground spring inside a dry cave in central Florida. The remains of many extinct animals from the Pleistocene Age (2 million - 10,000 years ago) were discovered at Devil's Den, including the bones of early man, dating back to 7,500 B.C.

The pleasant year-around temperature of 72 degrees in the Den allows comfortable diving, winter or summer. On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the cave's chimney. Hence, the early settlers called the place Devil's Den.

You'll find open water and cavern diving at its best & will be fascinated by the rock formations with stalactites and 33 million year old fossil beds, truly a natural wonder. On a cold winter morning you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the chimney. Thus, the early settlers gave the name Devil's Den.

Ben & Jerry's Unveils a New Line & New Flavors

BURLINGTON, Vt.- With the nation caught amidst an impressive winter, complete with polar vortexes, feet of snow in some places and a country-wide cold snap, there’s one sure sign that spring can’t be far away… Ben & Jerry’s proudly announces its brand new line with four new flavors, and the company believes it will resonate resoundingly with its “core” consumers.

“We are always looking to make something bigger and better for our fans”

The “Core” line is modeled off Ben & Jerry’s popular Karamel Sutra flavor. The concept includes a core center down the middle of each flavor, which in most cases perfectly compliments the two super-premium ice creams that are packed into every pint. Every Core flavor adds another component the company has become famous for: chunks, which add another layer of flavor and texture. Can you say: “Super Premi-YUM?”

The flavors were created by Ben & Jerry’s team of Flavor Gurus at the company’s headquarters in Vermont. “We are always looking to make something bigger and better for our fans,” said the lead flavor developer, Eric Fredette. “We wanted to blow out the concept of fun flavors, c...   [Read More]

    Historic Tours of Flagler College

Historic Tours of Flagler College highlight the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, listed as a National Historic Landmark. Built by railroad magnate, Henry M. Next is the grand lobby where they will stare up into an 68-foot domed ceiling supported by eight ornate oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next. The guest will move on to the dining room where 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows stream light onto the beautifully hand painted murals on the walls and ceiling.

Finally, they will visit the Flagler Room, formerly the Women's Grand Parlor, where they will gaze upon hand crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere, original hotel furniture and art, as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Fl...   [Read More]

    Bike the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail

Just west of bustling downtown Jacksonville, the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail-Trail, one of north Florida's oldest, most unique trails. Once a part of the CSX railway line, the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail is a thoroughfare for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. This unique park provides a 14.5-mile greenway between Imeson Road and County Road 121, just past the town of Baldwin. A dense tree canopy shelters much of the nearly 15-mile paved path, providing habitat for hawks, wood storks, stilts and belted kingfishers. You're also likely to encounter turkeys, alligators, rabbits, gopher tortoises and coral snakes. Beware the latter, a venomous species with wide black and red bands broken by narrow yellow rings.

The Imeson Road trailhead, closest to Jacksonville, is a good place to start an out-and-back journey. Here you'll find the first of several restroom facilities and benches along the trail. This also marks the start of a separate equestrian trail that runs in the adjacent tree line, except where creek crossings bring trail users together.
