The Jacksonville Icemen Earn Their First-Ever Franchise Victory

Today, The Jacksonville Icemen (1-4-1-0) picked up their first-ever franchise win and shut out the Brampton Beast (2-7-1-1) 5-0.

Just one day after being acquired by the Icemen, defenseman Jan Kostalek was quick to make a good first impression. At 14:54 in the first period, the 22-year-old scored his first-ever ECHL goal to give the Icemen a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Alexandre Goulet and Emerson Clark, extending Goulet’s point streak to six games and Clark’s point streak to four games. Icemen goalie Jamie Phillips was strong in the first frame, denying all 14 shots from the Beast.

Late in a very even second period, Icemen captain Garet Hunt received a great pass from Cameron Critchlow as he was exiting the box, leading to a 1-on-1 breakaway. Hunt capitalized on the play to give the Icemen a 2-0 lead with 2:40 remaining in the period. For the second time on the road trip, the Icemen would head into the room after the second period with a one-goal lead.

This time, there would be no stopping the Icemen as the team continued to add to their lead. Just 2:08 into the third period, Bobby MacIntyre notched his fourth goal on the season to give the Icemen a three-goal lead. Over 11 minutes later, Alexandre Goulet stole the puck in...   [Read More]

The Holidays in St. Augustine, Florida

It’s also the Nation’s Oldest City having been continuously occupied by European-established settlements since 1565. And did we mention that this little city by the sea is situated on the Atlantic Ocean and boasts miles upon miles of white, sandy beaches?

There are thousands of reasons to spend the holidays in St. Augustine. Here are just a few of them.

Visit Devils Den - Swim, Snorkle and Scuba Hot Spot.

Visit one of North America's most prehistoric places, Devil's Den -- an underground spring inside a dry cave in central Florida. The remains of many extinct animals from the Pleistocene Age (2 million - 10,000 years ago) were discovered at Devil's Den, including the bones of early man, dating back to 7,500 B.C.

The pleasant year-around temperature of 72 degrees in the Den allows comfortable diving, winter or summer. On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the cave's chimney. Hence, the early settlers called the place Devil's Den.

You'll find open water and cavern diving at its best & will be fascinated by the rock formations with stalactites and 33 million year old fossil beds, truly a natural wonder. On a cold winter morning you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the chimney. Thus, the early settlers gave the name Devil's Den.

Crystal clear water, year round 72 degree temperatures, ancient rock formations with stalactites, fossil beds, and much more. Devil's Den is truly a natural wonder. Bring the family and enjoy a day of fun and relaxation at Devil's Den.

Chili Cookoff In Jax Beach This February

On February 7, 2015 the J.L. Wiley Foundation for stroke awareness and healthcare advocacy will be celebrating chili once more with their third annual Chili Cook Off. Come out to the Jacksonville Beach Community Center from 4 to 7 and register your vote for the best chili from local amateurs and professionals. Can Sawgrass Country Club and Mark Duren defend their Chili Master titles?

The band 'Working for Crazy' will be playing some great music and there will be dancing along with a silent auction and raffle items.

The J.L. Wiley Foundation was founded in 2010 by the Wiley family after experiencing a stroke in their family, to make people more aware of the risk of stroke and the ways that it can be prevented. Our first goal is better stroke awareness and treatment. We never would have imagined that Joe would have had a stroke. We didn’t know any of the warning signs that in retrospect were present as much as several days before. We have come to realize that while your risk of suffering a stroke increases with your age that it still can strike people of any age.

It's back: Coca-Cola reintroduces Surge soda

Fans thirsty for a taste of ‘90s nostalgia – or those who are simply craving a citrus-flavored sparkling beverage with a kick – can rejoice in the news that SURGE is back after a 12-year hiatus.

SURGE, which debuted in 1996 and was taken off the market in the early 2000s, is making a comeback thanks, in part, to a passionate and persistent community of brand loyalists who have been lobbying The Coca-Cola Company to bring back their favorite drink over the last few years. SURGE is Coke’s first discontinued brand to return to the market.

The SURGE re-launch represents two additional firsts for Coke. The brand, which will be offered in its original formula in 12-packs of 16-oz. cans featuring the same retro design from yesteryear, is part of an innovative distribution deal between Coca-Cola and Amazon. A limited supply of SURGE will be sold exclusively through the online retailer, marking the first time Coke has distributed a product solely through e-commerce.

“If expectations are met, this may be only the first of a variety of efforts we explore to launch niche products through e-commerce relationships,” said Wendy Clark, president of sparkling and strateg...   [Read More]

    Bike the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail

Just west of bustling downtown Jacksonville, the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail-Trail, one of north Florida's oldest, most unique trails. Once a part of the CSX railway line, the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail is a thoroughfare for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. This unique park provides a 14.5-mile greenway between Imeson Road and County Road 121, just past the town of Baldwin. A dense tree canopy shelters much of the nearly 15-mile paved path, providing habitat for hawks, wood storks, stilts and belted kingfishers. You're also likely to encounter turkeys, alligators, rabbits, gopher tortoises and coral snakes. Beware the latter, a venomous species with wide black and red bands broken by narrow yellow rings.

The Imeson Road trailhead, closest to Jacksonville, is a good place to start an out-and-back journey. Here you'll find the first of several restroom facilities and benches along the trail. This also marks the start of a separate equestrian trail that runs in the adjacent tree line, except where creek crossings bring trail users together.
